In other World Cup qualifying games yesterday, Germany beat hosts Azerbaijan 2-0 in Baku to move four points ahead in their group, while France scored a 1-0 victory over hosts the Faeroe Islands in Torshavn.
The Germans have now moved to 19 points from seven games, with second-place Russia on 15 from 6.
Despite the three points, France are still five points behind Serbia with a game in hand in Group 7.
In another World Cup qualifier, two goals by Ivica Olic helped Croatia win 3-1 away to Belarus to strengthen their hold on second place behind England in Group 6.
