Jamaican athletes advance to 100 m final
Beijing Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser won the opening semi-final of the women’s 100 metres a short while ago at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany to qualify for this afternoon’s final.
Fraser clocked 10.79 to finish ahead of her Jamaican teammate Kerron Stewart, who also booked her place.
The final is scheduled to run off at 2.35 p.m. and Jamaica should add to their medal tally of two-Usain Bolt’s gold medal and Asafa Powell’s bronze medal.
Jamaican Kenia Sinclair will contest Semi-final Three of the women’s 800 metres at 12.46 p.m.
The other Jamaican in action today is Trecia Smith who competes in the women’s Triple Jump final at 1 p.m.
Smith is the only Jamaican woman to have won gold in a field event at a global championship.
Meanwhile, all three Jamaicans have qualified for the semi-final of the women’s 400 metres.
Of the three, Keliese Spencer, clocked the fastest time. She won the opening heat in 55.12 seconds ahead of Trinidadian Josanne Lucas, who clocked 55.41.
Nickiesha Wilson won heat two in 55.35, while Beijing Olympic champions Melaine Walker took heat three in 55.17.
American Lashinda Demus was the fastest qualifier with 54.66.
The semi-finals will take place tomorrow starting at 1.15 p.m. Jamaica time.
