Powell doubtful for sprint relay
Former World 100 metre record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica is doubtful for the 4 x 100 metre relay at the world championship.
Powell’s coach Stephen Francis says the sprinter is still feeling pain from the groin strain he suffered in the semi-final of the men’s 100 metres on Sunday.
Powell won the bronze medal in a season-best 9.84, behind compatriot Usain Bolt, who blasted to a world record 9.58 seconds. Tyson Gay took silver in an American national record of 9.71.
Francis says the injury could take up to 10 days to heal.
Powell anchored Jamaica to a world record run at the Beijing Olympics last year.
Reigning champion Gay has withdrawn from the 200 metres because of a groin injury. However, Gay says he still hope to run in the 4 x 100 metre relay.
The heats of the 4 x 100 relay will take place on Friday.
