Athens wildfires raging

Several thousand residents of Athens\' northern suburbs have evacuated their homes as wildfires continue to blaze around the Greek capital.

Almost the entire population of Agios Stefanos, located 23 kilometres or 14 miles northeast of Athens, fled by vehicle or on foot.

The BBC reports that multiple fires have been burning across an area about 50 kilometres in width, fanned by strong and unpredictable winds.

The fires are being described as the worst since those in 2007, which killed about 70 people.

Authorities say the situation is an environmental disaster.

Firefighting efforts were suspended as darkness fell yesterday, with several major blazes still burning into the night.

No casualties have been reported.
