Federer beat Britton in US Open

Roger Federer of Switzerland has extended his US Open winning streak to 35 matches with a 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 victory over NCAA champion Devin Britton of the USA in the first round today.



The top-seeded Federer is trying to become the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win six consecutive titles at the American Grand Slam tournament.



In another men’s match, French Open runner-up Robin Soderling of Sweden eliminated Alberto Montanes of Spain 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.



Other first round winners were Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, Tommy Robredo of Spain and John Isner of the USA



In the women’s draw second ranked Serena Williams started her quest for her fourth US Open title with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Alexa Glatch.



Williams\' sister, Venus, was scheduled to play Vera Dushevina of Russia tonight.



Other winners were Kim Clijsters, Amelie Mauresmo, Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska and Marion Bartoli.
