Cayman cuts beauty contest support

The government in the Cayman Islands has decided to cut its support for local beauty contests in an attempt to fill a big budget deficit.

The move is expected to save just CI$120,000 but sends a signal about the government\'s intent in dealing with the spending gap.

The cutback means that there will be no contests to select Cayman’s representatives at the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants.

One contestant says while she respects the move, as a bid to save the jobs of government employees, she wants to know why funding was not sought from the private sector.
