The Guyanese Government has formed a special task force to monitor the effects of the drought, linked to El Nino.

The current dry spell began in July and the country\'s Met Office has said it could last until the first quarter of 2010.

More than 30 percent of Guyana\'s GDP comes from agriculture and authorities say this is the sector which is facing the most severe threat from the lack of rainfall.
