The St Kitts and Nevis batsman, Steve Liburd, has been retained as Leeward Islands captain for the West Indies Cricket Board President’s Cup championship, starting this week in Guyana.

The 24-year-old Liburd keeps the job for the limited overs championship after he replaced Runako Morton as captain in February, when the Nevis and West Indies batsman was suspended for disciplinary reasons.

Morton is one of four players with West Indies experience in the squad. The other players are Antiguan fast bowler Gavin Tonge and Nevisian batsman Kieran Powell, who made their West Indies debut this year against Bangladesh, and Montserrat’s pacer Lionel Baker.

Five players from Leewards champions Antigua and Barbuda are in the squad Tonge, Justin Athanaze, Anthony Martin, Gavin Williams and veteran all-rounder Wilden Cornwall.

Without a regional one-day title since 1997, the Leewards are scheduled to face hosts Guyana in their opening match at Enmore on Wednesday.

The other matches on the opening day are defending champions Trinidad and Tobago against Jamaica at Providence Stadium, Windward Islands facing Combined Campuses and Colleges at Everest and Barbados against West Indies Under-19s at Bourda.
