Montserrat Chief goes to court to defend his seat

Montserrat’s Chief Minister, Reuben Meade should know today whether he will be allowed to continue serving as a lawmaker in that country’s Legislative Council.



Meade, who led the Movement for Change and Prosperity to victory at the last general election in September, was brought to court by Newspaper Editor, Bennette Roach.



Roach had filed a petition that the Chief Minister was not eligible to contest the poll.



In his petition, Roach who failed to win a seat as an independent candidate, said Meade did not satisfy constitutional requirements on Nomination Day.



Montserrat’s constitution prohibits persons who are shareholders and Directors of companies that have contracts with the government, from contesting a seat in the legislature.



They have to first disclose such interest at least one month prior to the election.



Roach is also contending that Chief Minister Meade was a Manager of a company holding a government contract.
