The Bahamas Government has promised several categories of public sector workers that they will receive agreed salary increases.

On the weekend Bahamian Prime Minister, Hubert Ingraham announced that his Government is now in a position to honour contracts with several workers’ unions.

Teachers are set to receive an US$800 lump sum payment, which was already provided for in their contract.

Nurses are to get a previously agreed 4 per cent salary increase and doctors 1.8 per cent.

Mr Ingraham also announced that talks will soon start on the implementation of an agreed health insurance coverage for nurses.

The Prime Minister said temporary jobs creation programme will also be implemented shortly.

The Government is to spend an extra $26.5 million on its annual budget for the current financial year for these expenditures.
