Sugar workers in Guyana have gone on strike as they continue to press or more pay.

The Guyana Agriculture and General Workers Union said an agreement had been reached in May for an increase in salaries and wages.

However, according to the union, the agreement was breached when a new board was installed at the Guyana Sugar Corporation.

Field Officer for the Union, Mandat Singh said the board of the state owned Sugar Company has not acknowledged the agreement.

Under the agreement, sugar workers are to receive eight to nine percent more pay.

Singh said the union has been holding discussions with the sugar corporation for the past two weeks in a bid to resolve the matter.

The workers have vowed to remain off the job until they are paid the increased salaries.
