UK televised debates coming

The leaders of the three main political parties in the United Kingdom have agreed to stage the first ever live televised election debates next year.

The Labour party’s Gordon Brown, Conservative leader David Cameron and Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, have agreed to go head-to-head in a series of three debates.

Live presidential debates in the US and other countries are said to have provided many of the key moments of election campaigns and are seen as having raised voters\' interest.

Despite many calls for such debates to be held in the UK, there has never been agreement reached between leaders and broadcasters.

The election is widely expected to be held on May six, although there has been speculation that it could be called for March 25 instead.

Officials say discussions will resume in the New Year to finalise detailed arrangements for the debates.
