Sunday racing scrapped for 2010

Sunday racing, which had an historic introduction at Caymanas Park on November 29 followed by a second meet on December 13, has been scrapped for 2010.

The decision to curtail Sunday racing was taken by the Caymanas Track Limited’s, (CTL) board which cited losses on the two meets staged so far, despite attracting large crowds.

CTL recorded sales of $17.9 million on the first day of Sunday racing and $15.3 million on the second day.

Those sales were done at Caymanas Park as the CTL controlled Off Track Betting Parlours were barred from opening following a directive from the Cabinet in the week leading up to the first Sunday racing.

Cabinet took the decision due to the outcry and lobbying of the church.

The Off Track Betting Parlour accounted for 70 percent of CTL sales on any given raceday.

CTL’s newly appointed director of marketing, Chris Armond says the promoting company took the decision last week after looking at the statistical data for the two experimental meets on November 29 and December 13.

Armond says without the Off-Track Betting Parlours Sunday racing will not work.
