Two arrested over New York City bomb plot

Two men have been arrested in the US over an alleged plot to bomb New York City last year.

No details have been given on the latest charges, but the two new suspects identified as Adis Medunjanin and Zarein Ahmedzay will appear in court in Brooklyn later today.

Law enforcement officials say the men were held by the FBI early this morning, as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged plot.

They are said to be associates of an Afghan-born Colorado man, Najibullah Zazi, who is accused of planning an attack on New York commuters.

Mr. Zazi and two other men were charged in September, however they have all denied the charges.

In the meantime, the US President has announced plans to review rules related to the issuing of visas to prevent a recurrence of the Christmas Day plane bomb plot.

Mr. Obama says the terror watch list will be boosted and security risk data better distributed.

He has also announced that hundreds more air marshals will be recruited, while screening at airports will be further improved.

Mr. Obama has criticized the country’s intelligence system saying that the US failed to connect and understand information it had prior to the failed attack on the Detroit-bound airliner.

It was earlier revealed that the accused Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was on a US database of about 550,000 suspected terrorists.

However, his name was not on a list that would have subjected him to additional security screening or kept him from boarding the flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

Mr. Abdulmutallab is to make his first appearance in federal court in Detroit today for a hearing to determine if he remains in custody.

He is charged with the attempted murder of 290 people, and five other counts.
