The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti, (MINUSTAH) is reporting that it has been able to provide jobs for unemployed young people by introducing a pilot programme recycling used tyres.
MINUSTAH says for the past two weeks several young people from Cité Soleil, one of the poorest quarters of Port-au-Prince have been turning the tyres into terracing to prevent further erosion of the bare hillsides.
The mission says the project aims to help protect the environment as well as to promote the social reintegration of young people by offering them short-term employment.
The project is being undertaken through MINUSTAH’s Community Violence Reduction section.
