Track star Kirani James and swimmer Ayesha Noel have been named Grenada’s most outstanding sports personalities for 2009.

James, described as the next Usain Bolt, and Noel, a fast rising swimming sensation, copped the coveted prizes during the awards at the Trade Centre at the weekend.

James enjoyed an impressive year highlighted by a scorching 45.45 run to erase Bolt’s six-year-old CARIFTA Games 400-metre record of 46.35.

James, the reigning World Youth 200 and 400-metre champion, recently accepted a scholarship at Alabama University after a trip to the US with his family to review three universities.

Noel won gold medals in all the individual events she participated in to help Grenada stave off a challenge from rival St Lucia to retain the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean swim meet for a fourth straight year.

She also made finals in all seven events she contested during the CARIFTA Swimming Championship last year and participated in the FINA Swimming World Championships last summer.
