Detained Americans said they met with police
The ten Americans accused of illegally trying to take children out of Haiti say they met with people they thought were Haitian policemen and a Dominican official, the week before they were stopped at the border.
The Americans were turned back on Friday night as they tried to take 33 children across the border into the Dominican Republic.
They are being held in a jail in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.
While the Americans have admitted that they had no documents to take the children out of Haiti, three interpreters who worked for them told CNN the group met twice with a man, who offered to help.
The interpreters say the man said he would have helped them to get a permit to take the children.
The American group says it wanted to start an orphanage in the Dominican Republic.
