Former US President Bill Clinton has been taken to hospital in New York City after complaining of discomfort in his chest.

He underwent a procedure at Columbia Presbyterian to place two stents, wire mesh tubes that help the flow of blood, in one of his coronary arteries.

His counsellor, Douglas Band, says he’s in good spirits.

The 63-year-old Clinton had quadruple-bypass surgery in New York in September 2004 after experiencing prolonged chest pains and shortness of breath.

Mr Clinton served two terms as president, during which he became known for his love of fast food and jogging.
