Taiwan has dismissed an allegation by the main opposition St. Lucia Labour Party that it had provided a significant sum of money to members of the ruling United Workers Party.

The labour party has claimed that some members of the Stephenson King government were each personally granted funds amounting to $1 million, allegedly to assist their constituencies.

Its also claiming that particular ministers have received sums over and above the amounts made to their colleagues.

However in a statement, Taipei’s Castries-based envoy, Tom Chou, dismissed the allegation as unfounded and untrue.

Mr Chou has further urged the opposition to refrain from making up stories which may discourage foreign assistance.

St Lucia re-established diplomatic ties with Taiwan after the United Workers Party won the 2006 general election, ending ties with China.
