French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he hopes to place a bill on administrative reforms in Martinique in the French parliament before the end of the year.

Voters in Martinique rejected more autonomy from France in the first of two referendums in January, but adopted simplified procedures on how the department is administered in the second.

Mr Sarkozy has also praised the decision to establish a single administrative body for Martinique.

He says the island is leading territorial administrative reform which is in the process of being adopted in mainland France.

The French President was speaking in Fort-de-France as he concluded a Caribbean trip, which also took him to Haiti.
