Reigning champions Jamaica suffered their first defeat of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) first class championship when Barbados beat them by 10 wickets in their sixth round match after lunch on yesterday’s third and penultimate day.

The match was played at Frank Worrell Oval in Trinidad and Tobago.

Jamaica, overnight 65 for four and still trailing by two runs, were bowled out for 120 against the bowling of pacer Pedro Collins five for 32 and Sulieman Benn four for 50.

Captain Tamar Lambert’s two-hour 21 off 98 balls provided the only real resistance on the day.

Pacer Andrew Richardson was undefeated on 23 at the end, while Carlton Baugh Junior scored 19.

Needing 54 runs to win, Barbados raced to their modest target off nine overs with Dale Richards slamming five fours and a six in an unbeaten 31 off 22 balls. Kraigg Brathwaite contributed 20 not out.

As a result of the victory, Barbados have now moved ahead of Jamaica to top the standings with one round of competition remaining.

The Bajans have completed their six-match programme with 57 points while Jamaica remain on 48 points from five matches.

The Jamaicans now need to win their final match, against Trinidad and Tobago starting Friday at Progress Park in Grenada, to stop Barbados from claiming their 21st regional first-class title.

Final score Jamaica 226 and 120, Barbados 293 and 54 without loss.
