Latin American, Caribbean support Argentina

Latin American and Caribbean leaders meeting in Mexico are supporting Argentina, in its dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands.

The Mexican president, Felipe Calderon, is reported to have said that a document has been drawn up behind closed doors giving Argentina unanimous support.

Both countries claim sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Latin America.

They also fought a war over the islands in 1982.

The issue had been relatively calm until a British oil exploration company recently announced drilling plans there.

According to a BBC Correspondent in Mexico, it’s not clear whether Caribbean countries that still have ties to Britain will support the resolution when the meeting ends today.
