TCI to elect Government soon

Gordon Wetherell, the Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands, said citizens can expect the return of a locally elected government by next year.

Governor Wetherell made the announcement yesterday.

In delivering his second quarterly statement since the United Kingdom resumed the management of the TCI last year, Wetherell said systems were being put in place to hold elections by July 2011.

Last August, the UK disbanded the local government and suspended the TCI legislature after a Commission of Inquiry found widespread corruption under the watch of former premier Michael Misick.

At that time, officials in London said the return of direct rule would be in place for at least two years.

However, Wetherell says significant progress has been made in recent months to pave the way for a return of a locally elected government.
