UN says no security vacuum

The United Nations says there will be no security vacuum in Haiti, as foreign troops withdraw from earthquake-ravaged Port-au-Prince.

Acting UN mission chief Edmond Mulet says US troops are already withdrawing, while the Canadians are due to leave on March 15.

According to Mr Mulet the UN will take over humanitarian relief as the foreign troops end their tour of duty.

The international body has been mandated to provide security in Haiti, but US and other foreign troops have been leading relief efforts following the devastating earthquake that struck on January 12.
