Boys, Girls Champs Round Up
Rochelle Farquharson of St Elizabeth Technical High School and Calabar High’s Chad Wright have created history at the centennial staging of the four-day ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships now underway at the National Stadium.
Farquharson became the first gold medal winner at the centenary celebrations of the meet, while Wright set the first record.
Farquharson mined gold in the Girls’ Triple Jump Open with a leap of 13.20 metres, ahead of the Wolmer’s pair of Samantha Francis, 12.68 metres and Jeanelle Facey, 12.50 metres.
Wright accounted for the first meet record when he smashed the Boys’ Class One Discus mark earlier.
Wright threw 52.16 metres in the preliminary round to smash the previous record of 51.43 metres, which was set last year by schoolmate Travis Smikle, the World Youth bronze medallist.
Canigga Raynor of defending champions Kingston College advanced with the next best throw of 42.85 metres, ahead of Smikle with 42.74 metres.
Meanwhile, Rojay DaCres of Calabar has taken the early lead in the boys’ heptathlon following the 110-metre hurdles. He is ahead with 821 points, followed by Orain McLeggon of St Jago High with 804 points, Shaquille Nelson of Wolmers with 746 and Kingston College’s Ryan Walcott with 734.
The Girls’ Class One Discus final is now underway, while the lone boys’ final, the Class One Long Jump is scheduled to start at 5.20 p.m.
