Barbados Opposition wants gun policy

The Opposition Leader Mia Mottley wants a clearly defined policy regarding the presence of guns in the Parliament.

Ms Mottley told reporters that she wants the David Thompson government to take that action before Parliament is reconvened in the middle of April.

Mottley who is the leader of the Barbados Labour Party, says the matter is serious enough for there to be quick action to set out a policy.

Her comments came against the backdrop of a recently reported altercation between Economic Affairs Minister David Estwick and opposition parliamentarian Dale Marshall during a debate on the 2010-2011 estimates in the House.

Details about what transpired between the two men remain sketchy, but Marshall, a former attorney general, reportedly filed an official written complaint with House Speaker Michael Carrington in which he asked for the matter to be referred to Parliament’s Committee of Privileges.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Thompson has dismissed Mottley’s latest call, saying the matter is now strictly in the purview of the Speaker.
