The United Nations says the Haitian government will be seeking US$3.8 billion at Wednesday\'s donors’ conference in New York to start rebuilding the quake-ravaged country.

The head of the UN Development Programme, Helen Clark, says the initial amount will facilitate the start of construction of government buildings, schools, hospitals, health care centres and courthouses.

The UN says an assessment prepared by the Haitian government with the support of the international community puts the total amount needed for Haiti\'s recovery at $11.5 billion.
