Defending champions John Mills have surged top of the points’ table after yesterday’s opening day of the Institute of Sports-sponsored three-day Junior High School Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

After five completed finals, John Mills have a combined 68 points to lead Windward Road by 33 points.

Windward Road have 35 points followed by Calabar on 20.5, Lowie River of Trelawny on 10.5 points and Shortwood Practising six.

John Mills have won four of the five finals contested with Rene Medley leading the way by smashing the only record on the day.

Medley cleared 1.61 metres to break the Girls’ Class 2 High Jump Record, surpassing the previous mark of 1.60, which was set by Nadelya Stephenson back in 2000.

There was also a one-two finish for John Mills in the Girls’ Class 3 Long Jump. Tamoy Williams won with a leap of 4.51 metres to finish ahead of teammate Tanika Williams, who did 4.47 metre.

John Mills are heavily favoured to lift their 17th straight title.

Five other finals are slated for today’s second day, which starts at 10 a.m.
