Organisers make swift reassurance in wake of blast

Commonwealth Games organisers have moved swiftly to reassure participating countries over safety concerns following bomb blasts in Bangalore at the weekend.

On Saturday, 10 people were wounded when two bombs went off outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium prior to the start of an Indian Premier League match.

The Games have been under a cloud with the upsurge of violence in the South Asian country and ever since extremist groups threatened to use the October 3 to 14 event as a target.

Chairman of the organizing committee, Suresh Kalmadi, says the security arrangements for the Commonwealth Games are constantly being monitored by the organising committee in tandem with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police.

The violence also put the start of the Indian Premier League in doubt last month, forcing organisers to deploy extra personnel and additional measures to reassure players and officials over their security.

Over 100 thousand visitors are expected in India for the Commonwealth Games, with countries from Africa, Europe and the Caribbean down to participate.
