Dancehall dictionary coming

Linguist Joseph Farquharson says he plans to introduce a new dancehall dictionary.

While the Jamaican music art form is popular abroad, it’s believed that some dancehall fans do not understand what some of the phrases in the songs mean.

Mr Farquharson says he plans to work on a multilingual compilation of dancehall definitions so that fans abroad, especially Jamaican teens in the US and Britain, can reconnect with their roots.

He estimates that it will take five years to translate dancehall dialect to English with the help of four translators, an editor and a research assistant.
