The Guyana Revenue Authority says it is has discovered thousands of businesses that have been evading their tax obligations.

The Authority says the offending businesses include rum-shops, restaurants, grocery shops and stallholders at municipal markets.

The authority has also accused business operators of employing tax experts to falsify their income statements so that it declares less than what is actually earned.

That practice has resulted in a significant loss in revenue for the state on a yearly basis.

The revenue authority has warned that persons who fail to comply with the tax regulations will be subjected to a penalty of up to five per cent per month of the unpaid taxes.
