US Attorney General Eric Holder says the police have made substantial progress in investigating an attempted car bomb attack in New York City.

Mr Holder said the police have established good leads into who parked the vehicle in Times Square on Saturday.

Earlier the city’s mayor Michael Bloomberg cast doubt on a claim by the Pakistani Taliban that it was behind the attempt.

The police have released CCTV footage of a white man seen removing his shirt near the scene and putting it in a bag.

Mr Holder told reporters that he’s confident the investigation will be successful and that the people responsible for the bomb attempt will be found and brought to justice.
