Barcelona beat Tenerife in Spanish League

Two goals by Lionel Messi helped Barcelona move closer to retaining their Spanish league title with a 4-1 home win against Tenerife yesterday.



Barcelona lead the standings on 93 points ahead of second-place Real Madrid on 89, who still have to play their 36th round match away to Mallorca today.



Valencia hold down third place on 68 points following a 3-1 victory over Xerez.



In other games yesterday, Getafe and Sporting Gijon battled to a 1-1 draw and Almeria outscored Villarreal 4-2 in a match which both sides finished with 10 men.
