Gun amnesty for Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands police are launching a month-long gun amnesty in a bid to remove illegal firearms from the streets.

The move follows a number of gang-related shootings and murders since the beginning of the year.

Detective chief inspector Patrick Beersingh said the increase in murders and shootings seemed to coincide with the release from prison of violent gangsters.

The amnesty follows the arrival last month of 14 officers from the United Kingdom to assist the British territory in murder investigations.

The last gun amnesty was in 2005 when 20 weapons were handed over to the police.
