UK to review tourism officials air passenger duty
Caribbean tourism officials have welcomed an announcement by the newly-installed David Cameron-led coalition administration in the United Kingdom that it intends to review Britain’s controversial air passenger duty.
Caribbean tourism officials had strongly objected to the levy, saying that it was unfair and would result in a major falloff in UK visitors to the region.
In an immediate reaction to the news out of Britain, Hugh Riley, the Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation says it’s just what the region needs at this time.
Meanwhile, the new deal hammered out by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats commits to taxing planes rather than passengers.
However, there are fears that the Caribbean is not out of the woods just yet with the UK travel industry generally adopting a wait and see approach to the move.
