Gay to pull out of Grand Prix
A week after injury forced triple world record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica out of this weekend’s Diamond League meeting, his main challenger American Tyson Gay is also poised to withdraw from the fifth event of the lucrative series.
His agent Mark Wetmore says it is very unlikely the former double sprint World champion will compete at Saturday’s Grand Prix at the Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.
Stressing that Gay was not injured, Wetmore says his fitness levels were not up to par.
Gay’s withdrawal would be another blow to meet organisers, coming so quickly on the heels of Bolt’s exit.
The Jamaican sprinter, who holds the fastest times in the 100 and 200 metres, pulled out last week citing an inflamed tendon in his foot as the reason.
Gay has been in excellent form this year and was set to make his Diamond League debut on Saturday before today’s announcement.
