The secretary general of CARICOM, Edwin Carrington is hailing the region’s linkages with Canada.

Mr Carrington today underscored what he described as long and friendly relations with that country after its new Plenipotentiary Representative, François Montour, presented his credentials to the regional body.

Carrington said CARICOM-Canada relations have been characterized by common values, mutual respect and support for each other’s viewpoints on a number of issues.

He further said Canada has long demonstrated its support of the regional integration process, and recalled the country’s announcement in 2007 of a development aid package for the region of CAD$600 million to be disbursed over a 10-year period.

This cooperation is centered on themes of strengthening democracy, promoting freedom and human rights, facilitating economic renewal and strengthening of economic linkages and addressing security challenges.
