The people of the Dominican Republic are voting in presidential elections today.

The three main parties contesting the polls are the Dominican Liberation Party of President Leonel Fernandez, the main opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party and the Social Christian Reformist Party.

The winner needs at least 50 percent of the vote to avoid a run-off election.

The Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, has a population of 9.5 million people.
