Election petition hearing in Antigua begins

Lawyers for the governing United Progressive Party (UPP) in Antigua are to begin submissions today to appeal a court ruling nullifying the elections of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and two of his Cabinet colleagues.

In March, High Court Judge Louise Blenman ruled that the late opening of polling stations in the three constituencies during the 2009 elections affected the outcome of the results.

Chairman of the UPP Harold Lovell has said he is confident that the high court ruling will be overturned.

However, the opposition Antigua Labour Party believes the original ruling will be upheld.
