Cuba to free more political prisoners

The president of Cuba’s parliament, Ricardo Alarcon says the government is prepared to release more political prisoners.

Following discussions with the Catholic Church and Spain last month, Cuba agreed to free 52 prisoners.

Speaking in Geneva today, Alarcon said it is very clear from discussions that the government wants to free all prisoners on the condition that they had not been accused of murder.

Last week, 11 Cuban dissidents were freed and allowed to travel to Spain, and nine more are expected to join them this week.

Cuba has been under pressure to free dissidents since Orlando Zapata Tamayo, a political prisoner on a hunger strike died in February.
