Alia Atkinson wins third gold medal

Jamaican Olympian, Alia Atkinson, won a third gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico last night.



The 21-year-old clocked a meet record one minute, 10.25 seconds to win the 100-metre breaststroke final.



The silver went to Alegria Medina in one minute, 10.80 seconds, while her Mexican teammate Byanca Rodriquez took bronze in one minute, 10.96 seconds.



Atkinson had already bagged gold medals in the 200-metre Individual Medley on Monday and the 200-metre breaststroke on Sunday’s opening day.



There was another medal for Jamaica yesterday as Dominic Walter won bronze in the men’s 800-metre freestyle in eight minutes, 5416 seconds. Gabriel Diez of Spain won the gold medal in eight minutes, 41.27 seconds.



The quartet of Kendese Nangle, Alia Atkinson, Alexi Ryal-Eaton and Natasha Moodie clocked four minutes, 20.93 seconds for fifth place in the women’s 4x100 medley final.



Mexico won the gold medal in a meet record time of four minutes, 09.29 seconds.



Jamaica have so far mined five medals at the Games with swimming accounting for three gold and a bronze, while the men’s badminton team won the silver medal.
