Jamaican sprinter Dexter Lee created history last night in Moncton, Canada, by becoming the first male athlete to retain the 100-metre title at the World Junior Championships.

The former Herbert Morrison Technical sprinter posted 10.21 seconds to win the gold medal on the third day of action. American Charles Silmon won the silver medal in 10.23 seconds and France’s Jimmy Vicaut took the bronze in 10.28 seconds.

It was Jamaica’s only medal at the championships so far.

Of the 15 other Jamaicans in action yesterday, only Jody-Ann Muir and Danielle Williams progressed.

Muir, 53.20 seconds, booked her spot in today’s medal round of the girls’ 400 metres, following a third place finish in Heat One of the semi-finals. The final is scheduled to start at 6.50pm this evening, Jamaica time.

Danielle Williams also advanced to the medal round of her event. She recorded a personal-best 13.63 seconds for second place, in Heat Two of the 100-metre hurdles semifinal.

That final is scheduled to begin at 7.30pm this evening, Jamaica time.

Four Jamaicans will be in action for the first time today. They will also compete in the morning session. Ristananna Tracey and Danielle Dowie will run in the opening round of the 400-metre hurdles at 7.15pm.

Then at 7.55pm, Yannique Ellington and Diandre Gilbert will face the starter in the 200 metres.

Lee will also be in action today when he competes in the opening round of the 200 metres at 10.06am in the morning.
