Windward Islands dethrone Jamaica
Jamaica failed to defend the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 three-day title in St Lucia and finished the tournament with a draw against Barbados at the Gros Islet Playing field.
The Windward Islands, who entered the fifth and final round with a three-point lead over Jamaica, pulled off a convincing seven-wicket win over the Leeward Islands at the Beausejour Stadium to clinch the 2010 title.
Chasing 135 for victory on the final day, the Windward Islands reached 137 for three just before tea to win the championship with 39 points.
The experienced Kavem Hodge saw his side to victory with a responsible, unbeaten 69 not out while Emmanuel Peter stroked 22.
Earlier, the Leeward Islands were bowled out for 118 after resuming the day 103 for nine.
Final scores in that match are Leeward Islands 226 and 118, Windward Islands 210 and 137 for three.
The Windward Islands finished nine-point clear of second place Trinidad and Tobago, while Jamaica and Barbados ended joint third with 27 points. Guyana finished fifth with 18 points and Leeward Islands last with 10 points.
Jamaica’s chances of defending the title were ruined from early after Barbados picked up first innings points.
Barbados, resuming this morning on 212 for six responding to Jamaica’s 259, replied with 271 for a first innings lead of 12.
Batting a second time, Jamaica were 132 for four when the game was called off. Ramon Senior was undefeated on 51, while Peate Salmom scored 40.
Over at Dennery Playing Field, T &T beat Guyana by 133 runs.
Final scores in the match are T&T 229 and 219 for three declared, Guyana 110 and 205.
