The United States has denied claims made by Venezuela that it’s planning to attack the oil-rich country.

On Sunday, President Hugo Chavez said the possibility of armed aggression from Colombia, backed by the US, was greater than it had ever been.

Yesterday the country’s ambassador to the United Nations, Jorge Valero, repeated the allegation and called for talks with the incoming Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos.

However, US State Department spokesman, Philip Crowley, says the Obama administration has no plans for military intervention against Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Chavez has threatened to halt oil exports to the United States if his country is attacked by Colombia.
