Diego Maradona has been axed as Argentina coach after refusing changes to his backroom staff.
Maradona admitted he was keen to remain in the role ahead of a meeting with Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona yesterday.
The 1986 World Cup winner rejected Grondona's demand to change several of his backroom team and the Argentine Football Association executive committee voted not to renew his deal.
Argentina crashed out of the 2010 World Cup finals at the quarter-final stage, where they lost 4-0 to Germany.
Before the pair's two-hour meeting yesterday, Grondona stated he was hopeful a new four-year deal could be agreed with Maradona.
