Rain threatens Twenty20 games in T&T

Persistent rain has delayed today’s start of the second leg of the Caribbean 20/20 Trophy at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago.

The rain, which started earlier in the afternoon, has resulted in a waterlogged outfield and has forced officials to keep the playing area covered.

Leeward Islands were scheduled to face Canada at 4 p.m. while tournament favourites Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago are expected to clash in the second game of the doubleheader at 8.

Meanwhile, Jamaica are not sure whether devastating opener Chris Gayle will be available for the match.

The West Indies captain injured his groin in the opening match against the Leeward Islands and has since been inactive. He underwent an MRI scan on Monday but there has been no word on his availability.

Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago both emerged from the first leg in Barbados without a loss with their semi-final spots booked and their clash could now be a precursor for Saturday’s final, once rain allows.

Jamaica and T&T have the same number of points in Group ‘A’ but the Jamaicans enjoy a better net run rate of plus 1.8-1-0 compared to T&T plus 1.4-5-6. Should rain wash out the match, then Jamaica would go through as group leaders, with T&T second.
