Jamaica to contest in finals at CAC Games today

Athletics will resume at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico today following a one-day break with Jamaica down to contest at least three finals.



Four-time national champion Wilbert Walker will contest the men’s triple jump final, scheduled to start at 6 p.m. this evening, while former Edwin Allen and Munro College middle-distance standout Aldwyn Sappleton will run in the men’s 800-metre finals at 7.50 p.m.



Jamaica will also be represented in the women’s 4 x100-metre final, which is being contested as a straight final. That final is set to start at 8.20 p.m. this evening.



The men’s 4 x100-metre team will run out of lane five in the first of two semi-finals in the morning session, with the final being the last event on the athletics’ programme at 8.35 a.m.



Maurice Smith will be the first Jamaican in action when he contests the first of five events of the men’s decathlon, the 100 metres at 8.15 a.m. this morning. The long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 metres of the decathlon will also be completed today.



The remaining disciplines in the decathlon will take place tomorrow.



Jamaica will also be represented in two other sports today, hockey and taekwondo.



In men’s hockey, position fifth to eighth places will be up for grabs with Jamaica facing Puerto Rico at 9 a.m.this morning.



In taekwondo, Jamaican Kenneth Edwards and Christian Alvarado of Mexico will face off in a quarterfinal fight in the men’s Under-87 kilogram division.



In all sports at the Game, Jamaica have won 32 medals including 12 gold eight silver and 12 bronze.
