At least two deaths have been reported in Belize following the effects of Tropical Storm Arthur.

Initial reports are that a woman and a child were killed and that a number of bridges were washed away, particularly in Southern Belize.

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), is also urging persons living along waterways throughout the country to be extremely cautious and aware of flooding which is occurring due to the heavy rainfall caused by the tropical storm.

NEMO says it has also activated a coordinated response especially in the mile 20 area on the Hummingbird Highway.

The response includes boats from the police and Coast Guard as well as helicopters to initiate search and rescue and respond to the needs of the people.

Tropical Storm Arthur is the first storm associated with the 2008 hurricane season that officially started yesterday.
