Economists in Guyana are calling for stiffer regulations to control the sale of fake commodities.
Economist Dr. Clive Thomas said while trade in counterfeit goods may be propping up the island’s ailing economy, its also causing significant job losses.
He reminded the nation that dealing in counterfeit products is a criminal offence, and that it harms the country’s international trade reputation while breeding corruption.
Street vendors earn handsomely from the sale of falsely branded products ranging from footwear to pharmaceuticals, Dr. Thomas added.
A senior customs official confirmed that Guyana has no restriction on the importation of fake goods into the country.
