More than two-thirds of the passengers aboard the government-owned Conviasa airline survived an airplane crash in south-eastern Venezuela.

The crash happened yesterday morning in the state of Bolivar.

Aerial photographs showed that the plane crashed in an industrial storage yard.

Bolivar’s Governor, Francisco Rangel Gomez, said 15 people were confirmed dead and 36 others survived when the plane, carrying 51 passengers and crew, crashed.

He says many of the survivors were taken to hospitals in the city of Guayana.

Rangel Gomez says the cause of the crash is yet to be determined and remains under investigation.

He has since declared three days of mourning.
